Qifeng Shoes Machine—Christmas is soon to be coming, the joy of Christmas can come in the size of just one shoe box. Children all around the world will get to experience Christmas this year through Operation Christmas Child. It's a program that ships shoe boxes filled with Christmas gifts to kids in third world countries.
"Can you imagine yourself or as a child waking up on Christmas morning and not receiving anything at all," said Jennifer Roberts of Operation Christmas Child. "To get a gift that you have never received anything before for free no expectations, no strings-attached is incredible."
Over the years the organization has delivered millions of shoe boxes to children around the world. On Friday, a big shipment went out from the Port of Charleston.
"Since the mid 1990s, the Port itself has seen over 15 million shoe boxes sent out from just the port of Charleston alone," Roberts said.
This year -- over 24 sea containers will ship from the Port of Charleston, each with almost 8 thousand shoe boxes. Containers that are on there way to boys and girls in Kenya and Tanzania for Christmas morning.
"When we look at it, Christmas is when they receive their boxes," said Maria Stephens of the Mediterranean Shipping Company. "A lot of countries don't celebrate Christmas like the United States does. So when they get their boxes. That's their Christmas."
The boxes are packed with everything from toothbrushes and socks to baseballs and toy cars. Over 25,000 shoe boxes were collected in the Tri-County area.
"If you can imagine children in other countries have never received a gift much less a Christmas gift. To them this is something so special and means so much to them," Roberts said .
"This is something that we feel is really important to reach out to people in other countries that can't necessarily help themselves."
The nationwide Operation Christmas Child program will be sending out a total of 6 million shoe boxes this holiday season.---
