When it comes to running, all shoes are not created equal
2010-7-26

For runners, the most important piece of equipment is their shoes.

Being the only part of the body that touches the ground, it is important to have something comfortable for one’s feet.

Not all running shoes are created equal, though, and overall comfort isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing which shoes suit best.

Different types and brands of shoes can also help prevent injuries.

A good shoe isn’t made to be perfect for everybody. Each person has to find what fits best individually.

“It all comes down to biomechanics,” said Doug Middleton, an employee at Achilles Running Shop in Mentor. “Everybody runs differently, so we try to match the right shoe with the right person.”

There are essentially three types of running shoes, each of which corresponds with three types of feet.

Motion control shoes are for people with low arches. They are designed to be more rigid to help control the weight transferred from the heel to the front of the foot.

Cushioning shoes are designed for people with high arches. As the name suggests, cushioning shoes use more cushions to improve shock absorption.

Stability shoes are the middle ground, having less emphasized elements of both motion control and cushioning shoes.

“Having the right kind of shoe can help people from injuring themselves,” Middleton said. “Most people we see just run as a hobby.

We have a doctor on hand who can help people, which is something most other places don’t have.”

One of the common and more preventable injuries for runners is shin splints, which is painful inflammation of the muscles around the shins.

There’s a couple ways Achilles can observe each customer’s running style and help find the right shoe.

First, by walking several yards without wearing shoes, they can tell whether you have high, low or neutral arches.

Second, they have a treadmill in the back of the store where they can watch how you run. Based on several observations, they can recommend what shoe fits best on an individual basis.

If your ankles aren’t stable, the shoes might be too big.

Achilles can also take a look at an old pair of shoes to see what parts of the shoe are more worn down than others. If the heel is more worn than the rest, extra padding there can help.

The surface on which a person can run also makes a difference in the type of shoe needed. Running in gravel or possibly muddy areas, it’s important to have enough traction.

Distance can also be a factor. People who run longer races need more cushions to support use over a long period of time.

The recommended lifetime for a pair of running shoes is about six months.

While there are many factors that go into shoes, personal taste can trump them all.

“A lot of it comes down to preference,” Middleton said. “If you have higher arches but like a different type of shoe, you can get insoles that will give you the right feel.”
